Students: Ages 3 - 5 years:

I accept students as young as age 3 after a readiness assessment.  Wunderkeys, by Andrea and Trevor Dow, is a wonderful piano method that combines music and math skills for preschoolers.  I supplement Wunderkeys with Piano Scales Make Piano Magic by Kristen Jensen and My First Piano Adventures, Faber and Faber as these very young musicians are ready to advance to the next level.  It is exciting to be able to encourage the joy of making music with these little ones and to give them a firm foundation in preparation for more advanced piano studies in the future. Students beginning Wunderkeys do not need a piano for the first two weeks of lessons and the first month of teaching materials is provided at no charge. There is a fee for weekly instruction during this four week trial.  Students who are ready for My First Piano Adventures will need an acoustic or digital piano with weighted keys when they begin lessons.   *****Please see info below regarding purchasing a piano.

Preschool piano lessons provide the opportunity to focus on proper technique before students have to focus on learning to read notes and count rhythm; this helps to prevent future problems with faulty hand positioning, posture, use of arm weight, etc.  Improper technique is a primary reason many students fail to advance and explains why so many adults who studied piano as children are no longer able to “find middle C.”

****A digital Yamaha piano with weighted keys can be purchased for as low as $599.00.  Please contact me for a 10% discount, locally, before you purchase your piano if you do not already have an acoutic or digital piano in your home. Please note that if you purchase a digital piano that isn't encased in a cabinet, it is necessary to make an adjustment in metal stands to bring them down to a level that is acceptable for proper hand technique for children and adults.  My huband has made an adjustment to one in my studio by drilling an extra hole in the adjustment mechanism and we will be glad to assist you in making this change. Failure to adjust a digital piano to the appropriate height will result in improper technique and poor practice habits.  I do not sell pianos or profit from the sale of pianos; I do know the frustration of having families purchase the wrong instrument that isn’t suitable for lessons and then trying to convince them of the necessity to replace it.  Today’s digital pianos with weighted keys make learning to play the piano more affordable than ever.  Check with your teacher before making your purchase.
